Bridge Pile Protection
Ridgeway's range of unique marine filter units, Kyowa Filter Unit are used to prevent potentially destabilising scouring which can occur at the foor of piers, bridges and other structures with an underwater base.
Rigorously tested to withstand strong currents, the units allow water to flow through whilst protecting the area around the foot of structures.
Applications
Kyowa Filter Unit are used for the prevention of scouring at the base of bridges, piers, jetties, dykes, harbour walls and offshore platforms.
Their primary function in this setting is to protect against erosion and to prevent instability of underwater structures.
They are also used to prevent revetment of materials. They are installed at the world's largest bridge - Akashi, Japan, which has a span of 3911m.

Technical Information
Kyowa Filter Unit are large corrosion-resistant nets manufactured from highly durable synthetic mesh, which Ridgeway can supply ready filled for delivery to your site. For more information on this and to learn about the filling process click here.
With their flexible structure Kyowa Filter Unit can easily be installed on uneven surfaces. Installation and removal is relatively straightforward wtih the auto-release hook system, and multiple Filter Units can be installed simultaneously for large projects, using a jig.
Their flexible construction means that the Filter Unit cover the ground efficiently and do not give rise to the suction that could occur if using more solid materials, for example, concrete blocks.
They can be used in conjunction with concrete blocks, sandbags and gabions. If being installed in a situation where exposure to daylight is likely, specially dyed mesh is used for resistance to ultra violet light weathering.
Kyowa Filter Unit are available in 2-8 ton sizes. For most marine situations the S type is suitable - it is manufactured using a nylon double mesh and has been designed to withstand the impact of strong current flow.
The black type is solution dyed to prevent weathering by ultra violet light; the less expensive white type does not have this feature and is suitable for use in deeper water.
Kyowa Filter Unit have been rigorously tested for durability in all soil and aquatic environments - full details of the comprehensive testing regime can be found in the downloadable PDFs below.
Manufactured by Kyowa, Japan's leading supplier of marine filter units, they have been successfully used in small and large scale marine and civil engineering projects since the 1980s. Full instructions for filling cassions can be supplied.
